How to use the profit calculator
- Pick your platform. Choose Etsy or Shopify at the top. Each keeps its own fee settings, so you can switch back and forth to compare.
- Enter the sale. Add your item price and what the buyer pays for shipping. If you offer free shipping, enter 0.
- Add your costs. Include materials or wholesale cost, the shipping label, packaging and what you spend on ads for each sale.
- Check the fees. Standard US rates are filled in. If you sell from another country or on a different Shopify plan, change them to match your fee statement.
- Read your results. Net profit, profit margin and break-even price update as you type, and the breakdown lists every fee line by line.
How net profit is calculated
The calculator starts with everything the buyer pays and subtracts every cost of the order:
Net profit = (item price + shipping charged) − (item cost + shipping label + packaging + advertising + platform fees)
Profit margin is net profit divided by what the buyer pays, shown as a percentage. Percentage fees are charged on the full order, shipping included, which is why the calculator adds shipping to the sale before it works out fees.
The break-even price is the lowest item price that covers all of your costs and fees, with your shipping charge left as it is. Price below it and every sale loses money.
What is a good profit margin?
There's no single right number, but these ranges are a useful starting point for small online shops. The calculator colors your result the same way.
| Net margin | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Below 0% | Each sale loses money. Raise the price or cut costs before you sell more. |
| 0–15% | Thin. One refund, a damaged parcel or an Offsite Ads fee can wipe out the profit. |
| 15–30% | Healthy for most products, with some room for discounts. |
| 30% and up | Strong. Common for handmade and digital products where you control the cost. |
If you don't count your own time as a cost, aim higher, because your margin is also your wage. The guide on calculating profit margin explains margin, markup and the most common mistakes.
Etsy vs Shopify fees at a glance
| Fee | Etsy (US) | Shopify Basic (US) |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | None (Etsy Plus is optional at $10) | $39, or $29 a month billed yearly |
| Listing fee | $0.20 per listing and renewal | None |
| Commission on each sale | 6.5% of item price plus shipping | None with Shopify Payments |
| Card processing | 3% + $0.25 | 2.9% + $0.30 |
| Advertising fees | 15% or 12% on Offsite Ads sales | Whatever you spend on your own ads |
On a $40 order, Etsy's standard fees come to $4.25 and Shopify Basic's payment fee to $1.46. Shopify's monthly plan and the cost of bringing in your own buyers close much of that gap. Etsy vs Shopify runs the numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Is this profit calculator free?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser, needs no account, and nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?
Yes. Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee and its payment processing fee are both charged on the shipping you charge the buyer, not just the item price. Offering free shipping and raising the item price by the same amount leaves your Etsy fees unchanged.
Should I include my own time in the item cost?
If you want the result to show true profit, yes. Multiply the minutes one item takes by your hourly rate and add it to the item cost. If you leave it out, read the net profit as what you earn for your time.
Why is my break-even price higher than my costs?
Because fees grow with the price. On Etsy in the US, about 9.5% of every sale plus $0.45 goes to fees, so the price has to cover your costs and those fees together. The calculator solves for that price exactly.
Are the fee rates correct for my country?
The defaults are standard US rates, checked in October 2026. Payment processing rates differ by country (UK Etsy sellers pay 4% + £0.20, for example), so edit the fee fields to match your own fee statement.
Can I use it for other marketplaces?
Yes, as an estimate. Use the Shopify tab, set the payment fee to your platform's processing rate and enter its sales commission in the third-party transaction fee field.
