The sale

What the buyer pays you.

$

Your listing price, before shipping.

What the buyer pays for shipping at checkout. If you offer free shipping, enter 0 and build the cost into your item price. Etsy charges its transaction fee on this amount too.

Enter 0 if you offer free shipping.

Your costs

What you spend to make, pack and send one order.

Cost of goods sold: materials, production or the wholesale price for one unit. For print-on-demand, use the base price your supplier charges. Include labor if you pay yourself per item.
$

Materials or wholesale cost for one unit.

What you pay the carrier for the label. If you buy discounted labels through Etsy or Shopify, use that price.
$

What you pay for the postage label.

Add up everything that goes into one shipment. A pack of 100 mailers for $25 is $0.25 each; add tape, tissue, stickers and thank-you cards the same way.
$

Boxes, mailers, tape, labels and inserts.

Divide your ad spend by the items it sold. For example, $60 on ads that led to 30 sales is $2.00 per item. Leave Etsy Offsite Ads out of this; enter that fee in the Etsy fees section.
$

Total ad spend ÷ items sold.

Shopify fees

Standard US rates are filled in. Change them to match your fee statement.

Shopify Payments in the US charges 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, 2.7% on Grow and 2.5% on Advanced for online card payments. Rates vary by country; check Settings > Payments in your Shopify admin.

Spread your monthly subscriptions across orders. A $39 plan plus $20 in apps over 100 orders a month is $0.59 per order. Leave at 0 to ignore.
$

If you take payments through PayPal, Stripe or another external provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds 2% (Basic), 1% (Grow) or 0.6% (Advanced). Put the provider's own rate in the gateway fee above.

Shopify fees by plan in 2026

Shopify doesn't take a commission when you use Shopify Payments. Instead you pay a monthly plan and a card processing fee on each order. These are the US rates for online card payments.

PlanMonthly priceOnline card rateExtra fee without Shopify Payments
    Basic$39 ($29 billed yearly)2.9% + $0.302%
    Grow$105 ($79 billed yearly)2.7% + $0.301%
    Advanced$399 ($299 billed yearly)2.5% + $0.300.6%

The Starter plan ($5 a month) is built for selling through social media links rather than a full store, and it charges a much higher fee per sale. Shopify Plus starts at about $2,300 a month for large brands. Card rates differ outside the US; your exact rates are under Settings > Payments in your Shopify admin.

Worked example: a $40 order on Shopify Basic

    LineAmount
    Payment fee (2.9% of $40 + $0.30)$1.46
Item cost, label, packaging and ads$16.70
Net profit before monthly costs$21.84 (54.6% margin)

That looks better than the same order on Etsy, but it leaves out two things: your monthly plan and the cost of bringing buyers to your store. Both belong in the calculation.

Count your monthly costs per order

Add up everything you pay Shopify and app developers each month and divide it by the number of orders you get. A $39 plan plus $36 in apps is $75 a month. At 60 orders a month that's $1.25 per order; at 20 orders it's $3.75. Enter the result in Plan & apps per order.

The fewer orders you have, the more these fixed costs weigh on each sale. That's why a new store can look profitable per order and still lose money overall.

When a higher plan pays for itself

Moving from Basic to Grow lowers the card rate from 2.9% to 2.7%, saving $0.20 on every $100 you sell. With monthly billing Grow costs $66 more, so you'd need around $33,000 a month in online card sales before the lower rate covers the higher plan. With yearly billing the gap is $50 a month, or about $25,000 in sales.

    Shopify profit calculator FAQ

Does Shopify take a percentage of sales?

Not if you use Shopify Payments. You pay the card processing fee (2.9% + $0.30 on Basic in the US) and your monthly plan. If you use another payment provider, Shopify adds a fee of 2%, 1% or 0.6% depending on your plan.

What's the difference between the payment fee and the transaction fee?

The payment fee is what it costs to process the card. The transaction fee is an extra charge Shopify adds only when you take payments through a third-party provider instead of Shopify Payments.

Should I include my Shopify plan in profit per order?

Yes, if you want to know whether the store makes money overall. Divide your monthly plan and app costs by your monthly orders and enter the result in the Plan & apps per order field.

Are Shopify Payments rates the same outside the US?

No. Card rates vary by country and plan. Check Settings > Payments in your Shopify admin and enter your rate in the gateway fee fields.

Do I pay card fees on shipping?

Yes. The card fee is charged on the full amount the customer pays, shipping included, which is why the calculator adds shipping to the sale before working out fees.
