The short answer

For a seller in the US, a typical Etsy sale costs a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, and 3% + $0.25 for payment processing. On a $40 order that adds up to $4.25, about 10.6% of what the buyer pays.

That's the baseline. Advertising, currency conversion and a few country-specific charges can add more, and the share Etsy takes rises sharply on cheap items. The rest of this guide goes through each fee in turn.

Listing fee: $0.20

You pay $0.20 to publish a listing, and it stays live for four months or until the item sells. If you have more than one item in stock, Etsy renews the listing automatically each time one sells and charges another $0.20. Private listings made for a single customer cost $0.20 too.

Because of those renewals, the simplest way to think about the listing fee is as a cost of every sale rather than a one-off charge. That's how the calculator treats it.

Transaction fee: 6.5% of the order total

The transaction fee is Etsy's commission. It's 6.5% of everything the buyer pays you for the order: the item price, the shipping you charge, gift wrapping and any personalization charge. In the US it isn't charged on the sales tax Etsy collects.

Shipping is the part sellers most often forget. A $30 item with $6 shipping is a $36 order, so the transaction fee is $2.34, not $1.95.

Payment processing: 3% + $0.25 in the US

Etsy Payments charges a separate fee to process the buyer's payment. In the US it's 3% of the total plus $0.25 per order. Rates vary by country: UK sellers pay 4% + £0.20, and other countries have their own rates, so check Etsy's payment processing table for yours.

The fixed $0.25, together with the $0.20 listing fee, is why small orders lose a bigger share to fees.

How much Etsy takes at different prices

Here are the standard US fees, without ads, at four order totals:

Order totalTotal Etsy feesShare of the sale
$8$1.2115.1%
$20$2.3511.8%
$40$4.2510.6%
$100$9.9510.0%

The percentage fees are always 9.5% combined. What changes is the weight of the fixed $0.45. If most of your products sell for under $15, bundles and sets are one of the easiest ways to keep more of each sale.

Offsite Ads: 15% or 12%

Etsy advertises listings on sites such as Google and social media. If a buyer clicks one of those ads and buys from your shop within 30 days, Etsy charges an Offsite Ads fee on that order: 15% for most shops, or 12% for shops that made more than $10,000 in the past 12 months. The fee is capped at $100 per order.

Shops under $10,000 can opt out. Shops above it have to take part. Take the $40 order from earlier: with a 15% Offsite Ads fee, Etsy's fees rise from $4.25 to $10.25, and in our sample numbers the seller's profit drops from $19.05 to $13.05. If your shop can't opt out, check that your prices still leave a profit on these orders.

Other fees you might see

  • Etsy Ads. Ads inside Etsy search work on a daily budget you set. Divide what you spend by the sales it brings to get a cost per sale.
  • Currency conversion: 2.5%. Charged when your listings are priced in a different currency from your payment account.
  • Regulatory operating fee. Sellers in some countries pay an extra percentage to cover local regulation costs. It shows on your statement if it applies.
  • Etsy Plus: $10 a month. Optional. It includes listing credits and Etsy Ads credits, plus extra shop customization.
  • Shipping labels. Labels bought through Etsy are charged to your Etsy account, so they show up next to your fees on your statement.

How to keep more of each sale

  • Price with fees included. Work out the price that covers your costs and leaves your target margin after fees, rather than adding a fixed amount on top of cost. Our handmade pricing guide shows the formula.
  • Charge shipping honestly. Fees apply to shipping too, so overcharging for shipping doesn't hide profit from Etsy. It just makes your listing look more expensive.
  • Check your payment account each month. Your monthly statement lists every fee by type. Compare it with what you expected, especially Offsite Ads and currency conversion.
